“The Tasmanian Mines Department were happy to transfer the lease to us but first we had to meet the mines inspector at the bog to help us fill out the mining application.

The application had a huge section on plant and equipment to be used to dig the peat. When the inspector asked what machinery we were going to use I pointed to a spade leaning against a post. He laughed, and asked again what machinery we were really going to use. I laughed and explained that the spade was all we needed, and we would dig the peat in the traditional method used on Scottish bogs. Eventually, with the help of a contact in the UK, we were even able to obtain an historic peat spade once used on the peat fields of Northumbria, and that’s a story in itself.”
