“I have always held a fascination with the Antarctic, and have promised myself one day I will get down there. While enjoying a role as guest speaker (Whisky) on the wonderful ice breaking cruise ship The Orion, which used to ply the waters of Tasmania for short food safari voyages, an opportunity arose for us to place a 20lt barrel of whisky on board one of their biannual trips to Commonwealth Bay in the Antarctic, to visit Mawson’s Hut. The idea was to place the barrel of whisky in the hut, take photographic evidence and return the barrel to Hobart to be later bottled as a special release.

As luck would have it, access to Mawson’s Hut that year was denied due to a huge broken ice shelf blocking the bay. The barrel did reach below 60 degrees South however, and it was photographed on a small ice flow with two whales swimming by in front of the barrel. The barrel also visited Macquarie Island on the way home and was photographed with seals and penguins admiring it… or the contents of it at least.”
