“The reason our tour bus is called the Drambulance is all thanks to our previous tour manager — now chairman of the tasting panel — a gentleman named Mark Nicholson. To understand why we ended up with a Drambulance name, you need to know a bit about Mark.
He started his working life off as a meat inspector, who got tired watching Australians do bad things to good meat and became a butcher. He’s got a great love of butchery and of the meat industry, but he’s also the kind of butcher who ends up marrying a vegetarian. He’s full of his contradictions. One day his wife came to him and said ‘Mark, you spend ten hours a day making sausages and you never get to see your kids. If you don’t do something about this, they’ll grow up, they’ll move away, and you’ll never see them.’ Mark decided she was absolutely right — as she usually is — and he decided that the best thing to do would be to utilise one of his other great loves in life, English literature, and become a teacher.
After many years in service at the school, he happened to be over in New Zealand fishing with Bill Lark. As they were sitting there in a boat on a nice winter’s morning, Bill said, ‘Mark, I need someone to run tours. Is there any chance you might know someone who would be interested?’ Mark said, ‘Well actually Bill, I think I do. I just need to speak to my wife.'”
