Single Malt Whisky

If you’re looking for a fine example of Australian single malt whisky, then starting with these from Lark Distilling Co. is an excellent choice. At Lark Distilleries, we have been producing some of the finest premium whisky in Tasmania for over 30 years. While that may seem young for a whisky label, especially compared to some well-known Scottish bottlings, the proof of our expertise is shown in the bottle. Lark Distilling Co. has been the recipient of many Australian and international awards for our Australian spirits. We have gained a reputation for crafting some of the best whisky available in Australia.

Single malt whisky from Lark Distilleries is regularly toasted as the best top-shelf whisky available, and it is enjoyed by passionate and casual drinkers alike. Our products are made in Tasmania, which is considered the true heartland of the Australian whisky industry. The unique climate of Tasmania has often been compared to the traditional Scottish whisky-producing regions. However, by using locally sourced ingredients for our whisky, there are some key differences in the flavours. If you’ve had Scottish whisky in the past, then you may be familiar with the flavour, and you’ll notice the unique differences that make Tasmanian whisky some of the best in the world.

In the past several years, the Australian spirits industry has been making waves all over the world. With some changes to the industry, it allowed for smaller producers to come onto the market. Whisky, in particular, is driven by incredibly passionate people, and Lark Distilling Co. is no exception. Our team is incredibly vested in producing only the finest products, and nothing is released to the market until it is considered at optimum levels. We are intensely proud of our single malt whisky, and with the awards we’ve achieved, it can be safe to say that many others agree about the quality.

What does single malt whisky taste like?

The flavours you’ll find in a single malt whisky are an oaky or woody flavour mixed with several other elements. Typical other flavours may include vanilla, dried fruits, and caramel. When you try whisky, you’ll notice, while there are some similarities, all are different and unique to their region.

The true brilliance of Australian whisky, and others, is that the distiller will look to get specific flavours into their product. A quality whisky can be determined by how apparent or subtle these flavours are, and you can often detect them through proper tasting techniques.

Performing a whisky tasting is an excellent method for getting the most out of your chosen label. If you have the option to visit a distillery, then it is highly recommended. When visiting a local distillery, the staff can take you through the process and introduce you to the skills required to successfully perform a whisky tasting. If you cannot visit (some distilleries are inherently secretive), buying a whisky tasting set is your next best option. You are usually offered several small bottles in a tasting set, and some may come complete with a Glencairn whisky glass.

There are three main components to whisky tasting: appearance, aroma, and palate (taste). Start by pouring a tasting sample in your glass, about 30ml. You can swirl the liquid, look at how it moves around the glass, and then examine the colours. The swirling action will help to release the aromas, and you can inhale the whisky vapours. All scents will invoke a memory; consider what pictures the whisky aroma places in your mind. Next, take a sip and allow the whisky to coat your tongue before you swallow. Think about how the whisky felt in your mouth. What flavour did you detect, and was there an aftertaste?

A high-quality single malt whisky will have several different flavours and scents. Your experience is highly subjective, and what one person may experience may not be relative to another. With many Australian whiskies, you may find tasting notes (on the back label or the distiller’s website), and these can assist you in detecting flavours.

How to drink single malt whisky?

There really is no right or wrong way to enjoy a single malt whisky. The best way to drink it is the way you prefer. If you enjoy whisky with a mixer, you may find that you lose some of the more subtle flavours, and you don’t get the complete experience. If the ABV (alcohol by volume) is higher than you usually drink, you may prefer to add a few drops of water when you’re tasting.

Whisky can often be enhanced by serving it with food. Many of the foods that pair well with red wine go very well with premium whisky. You can enjoy your whisky with BBQ red meats, pork ribs, chocolate, and cheese. A popular method for consuming food with your drink is to create a charcuterie board filled with local produce, including cured meat, fruits, nuts, and cheeses.

Where can I buy the best single malt whisky near me?

At Lark Distilling Co., we have all our single malt whisky available in our online store. You can find most of our whiskies in local retail outlets, but we’ll often keep limited releases for direct sales.

After you select the whisky you prefer, we’ll pack up your whisky delivery and hand it over to our couriers. For most deliveries, your order will arrive in less than five days (regional areas are less than ten days). If you need any assistance in choosing your preferred whisky, please feel free to contact any of our team members.
