          Tasmanian Whisky

Tasmanian Whisky is relatively young when compared to other world-class whiskies. While Australia has a reasonably long history of producing excellent spirits, it wasn’t until 1990 when Bill Lark lobbied the government to overturn antiquated liquor licensing rules. Since then, the whisky industry has flourished in Tasmania, with nearly 60 distilleries operating.

Lark Distilling Co. has been at the forefront of the whisky industry in Tasmania, and it has been our pleasure to see it built into what it is today. When you sample Tasmanian whisky, you’ll understand why it is being noted as some of the best in the world.

How to choose the best Tasmanian whisky?

The best method for choosing your next Tasmanian whisky is to visit the distiller’s website and read the tasting notes. At Lark Distilling Co., we have detailed tasting notes on all our premium whisky. These notes will give you a good idea about the flavours you’ll find in that particular whisky. Almost all whisky labels will have a few different styles to choose from.

The style and taste of any whisky will depend on several key factors. The first is where the distillery is located; being in Tasmania, we have access to some of the cleanest water in the world. The next is the grain recipe used. Most passionate distillers will experiment with different methods and grains to get an ideal mix. The number of stills used will also have some bearing on the flavour. Finally, the exact oak barrels used will provide most of the flavour. After the whisky is placed inside, it goes through several maturation stages and takes on flavour from the barrels. The type of barrels used will weigh heavily on how the final product tastes. There isn’t a specific time frame for when whisky will be ready; this is all done by taste. The head distiller is the person who decides when a barrel is ready for bottling.

An excellent way to decide if Tasmanian whisky is the best is to look at the awards the distillery has won. Or, you can read up on reviews written by trusted experts. Although, the best method is to try the whisky yourself, as tasting whisky can be highly subjective. Ordering a tasting set will give you an example of what a specific distillery produces. Visiting distilleries and trailing the whisky first hand is another excellent method for deciding which whisky is best. Trusting your own taste buds is the ultimate method to determine the best whisky.

          How to store Tasmanian whisky?

The way you store Tasmanian whisky depends on if you plan on drinking it soon or not. The ideal serving temperature for whisky is at room temperature or 15-20oC, to be exact. Whisky should not be kept in the fridge, even if your home is unusually hot and humid like you’ll find in a tropical climate. The best place to keep whisky between pours is in a dark corner of your kitchen pantry. Try to avoid placing whisky near large appliances (fridge, oven, etc.) as these create spaces of fluctuating temperatures.
