Tasmanian Single Malt Whisky
At Lark Distilling Co., we are intensely proud of our Tasmanian single malt whisky. These are distilled by our passionate distillers, and our aim is to showcase why Tasmanian whisky is one of the best in the world. The Australian whisky industry is reasonably young compared to other countries, but because of our unique climate, we can produce a whisky that is delightfully different.
Tasmanian single malt whisky is made using a similar method to traditional Scottish whisky. All our ingredients are sourced in Tasmania, where possible, and this provides a unique flavour profile. If you've never tried an authentic Tasmanian whisky before, then by choosing Lark, you are off to a brilliant start.
What does single malt whisky taste like?
In the Lark Distilling online shop, you'll find tasting notes on all our products. You can use these notes as a way to uncover the flavours of our Tasmanian single malt whisky. However, as everyone's experience is different, it is best to treat these as a guide for the flavours you may expect. The best way to determine the flavour inside any aged whisky is by trying it yourself.
Whisky tasting is a learned skill, and those that have perfected it can detect almost all the flavours within a specific label. Writing tasting notes can take time and is often written by two or more whisky tasters writing up their experiences. If you're starting your whisky journey, buying a Tasmanian single malt whisky tasting set is an excellent idea. Look for a set that gives you a good quality whisky glass. You’ll be provided with a Glencairn glass in the Lark Distillery tasting flights, as these are ideal for whisky tasting. Whisky tasting is highly subjective, so don't be too surprised if you taste different flavours or can't detect all the flavours described in the notes.
Tasting whisky is completed in three parts: appearance, aroma, and palate. When you're ready to taste whisky, make sure the bottle is at room temperature, and pour yourself a small amount (10-15ml) into the glass. Have a look at the liquid, and describe the colours; you can swish the glass and watch how the whisky moves. Consider how you'd describe it, how vicious is the liquid? Next, check the aroma, and inhale the whisky after rolling it gently around the glass. The scent is a brilliant activator for memories. What image does the scent place in your mind? The appearance and the scent will help form a picture of what you may taste in the whisky.
The final step is to taste the whisky. Allow the liquid to roll over your tongue and make it coat your mouth; note what flavours you find. Swallow the whisky and check if there is an aftertaste. Do the flavours linger? Does it change after you've swallowed? You can write your experience down and refer to it at later tastings. You can perform another tasting soon after, and you can add a few drops of water to the glass. Adding water will dilute the alcohol and allow some of the flavours to be more apparent, taste the whisky again and see how it changes.
What is the ideal temperature to serve single malt whisky?
All Tasmanian single malt whisky should be served at room temperature, or to be more precise, it should be around 15-20oC. The best place to store your top-shelf whisky is the back of a kitchen pantry, or somewhere cool and protected from direct sunlight. Try to keep the bottle away from fluctuating temperatures - such as above fridges or near ovens.
If you live in a warm climate, like some northern states of Australia, then you may need to cool the whisky slightly. Use a large block of ice and pour the whisky over it. This will cool the whisky, and as the ice block has a large surface area, it won't melt as quickly as traditional ice cubes. The optimal serving temperature of whisky is at room temperature, but if you enjoy it slightly warmer and don't want to use ice cubes, that is perfectly fine. The best way to drink whisky is any way you prefer.
